Product Designers and Informatics students have fun at the Toy Fair…

Product design students and Human-Computer Interaction students had the privilege to visit the Toy Fair for a special student day at Olympia in London on 22nd January, where they attended a series of presentations from leading designers and manufacturers.

First to present was John Stewart, director of World’s Apart (one of the largest British toy manufacturers in the UK), he spoke about the thrills of working in the toy industry. Then came Dougal Grimes and Rich Mazel from Hasbro who gave some great tips on how to get your toy design into production and how best to communicate your idea. After which, there was a really useful presentation on all aspects of intellectual property and finally an inspiring and thought provoking session by Jason Caldwell from HTL group on toy design versus other design genres. Students also had the chance to explore the newest trends in the field of toys and games, with exclusive tours of Hasbro and the Wicked Vision stands.

This cross-department excursion was facilitated by Diane Simpson-Little (course leader of the BSc product design degree) and Marianna Obrist (lecturer for interaction design).

The product design students attended as part of their module ‘Toy and Game Design’ taught by Diane, where they are currently working on a live brief with the toy manufacturer Wicked – more of which will be revealed soon…
