exercises in upcycling

The first year designers on the Product Design BSc recently undertook a short two week project within the Visual Communication module which looked at how recycled or otherwise waste materials could be used to create new products which have a responsible foundation – creating ‘upcycled’ products.

A variety of materials and starting points were chosen, from simple sheets of recycled corrugated cardboard, which were used to create a desk tidy to a guitar which had been retrofitted to include a speaker, allowing an mp3 player  to be linked to the instrument.

Other examples included an innovative light shade created from a series of folded and cut aluminium drinks cans and a table constructed from discarded mushroom crates and scaffold boards.

The products created by the students on this short course highlighted the fact that new materials are not the only choice when specifying for a new product and showcased how they can be used with imagination.
